After a great transfer window with some spectacular transfers among the worlds greatest players, there is always a great end: Deadline Day. In the Dutch Eredivisie only, there were 46 transfers in the last 24 hours.
In our perspective, Deadline Day was normally a day of emotional last-minute transfers, but is that actually true? Due to COVID-19, clubs can invest only if they receive the money so that could be a good reason for a deadline-day-deal.
In this blog we take a look at our Transfer Model to analyse three deadline day transfers of Dutch players. Have they made the right choice? Another trend of this window is the amount of big transfers; Messi to PSG, Ronaldo to Manchester United, Lukaku to Chelsea and many more. Therefore we also take a look at the two biggest Dutch transfers of the window: Denzel Dumfries to Inter and Memphis Depay to Barcelona.
Mohammed Ihattaren. The still only 19-year-old wonderkid already played in the first team of PSV at the age of 17 and showed some exceptional qualities during that period. After some struggles with coach Roger Schmidt, Ihattaren and PSV decided that it would be better to part ways. According our Top Down analysis, Sampdoria is a perfect step for the attacking midfielder. If he can show again his qualities at Sampdoria, he might grow to the level of Juventus.
Micky van de Ven is a 20-year-old central defender and has transferred to VfL Wolfsburg during this window. According to our models, it is a to big step to make and it was a better option for Van de Ven to make a transfer to the Eredivisie to AZ, Vitesse or Feyenoord.
Memphis Depay. After being a free agent, Memphis Depay has signed for FC Barcelona where he has been reunited with the former coach of the Dutch national team Ronald Koeman. In our Top Down model, Barcelona stands on the 9th place and is a great step for the multifunctional attacker.
Luuk de Jong. While many football fans around the world were surprised of this transfer, Ronald Koeman told to the media that he was very happy to add a different type of striker to the squad of FC Barcelona. However, the level of Luuk de Jong is at this moment too low to become a starter at FC Barcelona. As a pinch hitter, Luuk de Jong can still bring a lot of value with his strength and heading qualities.
Denzel Dumfries. After a phenomenal Euros, where he scored two goals and provided one assist, it was the right moment for the 25-year-old right wing-back of PSV to make a transfer. At this moment, Inter has a higher level than Dumfries. However, Dumfries has showed in the past at Sparta, SC Heerenveen and PSV that he can adapt quickly to a higher level.
