The rising career of Lucas Chevalier

Lucas Chevalier: maybe not known by every football lover, but he is certainly making a name for himself in France. The goalkeeper, who was born in the city of Calais, is a player of Lille but is loaned out to Valenciennes this season. This is boosting his career a lot. In this blog, we are taking a look at the development he is going through, now that he is in his first season as a professional footballer.

The 20-year-old French goalkeeper made his debut in the Ligue 2 match against Pau FC (1-1). Since that day, he only missed one match and already played fifteen. He conceded nineteen goals in total and held a clean sheet five times. According to our data, Chevalier developed very well in only half a season. His Player Level went from around 500 to a Player Level of 1643 now. Because he went out on loan from Lille to Valenciennes, the Average Team Level went down. This is why he could climb up to the Average Team Level quite fast. With this, Chevalier shows that making minutes for a first team is very good for a player his development. But when is he ready for the next step?

If he keeps developing like this, he will be a Ligue 1 keeper within a year. But will he already be good enough for playing time at Lille? Of course, it is more difficult for a keeper to make some minutes on the pitch because it is not quite normal to bring another keeper in during a match. Let us first take a look at where he stands compared to the rest of the Valenciennes squad. According to the Player Levels, Chevalier is in sixth place, exactly on the same level as the Squad Top 14 Average.

Now we will take a look at the goalkeepers in Lille’s current squad. That Chevalier has the potential to become a goalkeeper for Lille’s first team is clear. But can it already happen next season? Lille has three goalkeepers in their squad right now. Ivo Grbic, a 26-year-old Croatian. Léo Jardim, a 26-year-old Brazilian and Adam Jakubech, a 25-year-old Slovak. Jardim has a Player Level of 2896 and with that is quite a lot above the Player Level of Chevalier. Léo Jardim is a lot closer with a Player Level of 1889. Jakubech has a Player Level of 1321.

The chances of Chevalier being the starting keeper for Lille is not very big, also looking at the age of first keeper Grbic. The best step for Chevalier next year would be at a club with an Average Team Level that is above the Player Level of Chevalier, but still with a big chance of being the first keeper. This way he can develop towards and maybe beyond the Average Team Level again, just like he is doing now at Valenciennes. Given the fact he still has a contract until the summer of 2024, another loan deal at a higher level seems most likely for the youngster.
