The use of data and technical analysis has become essential for today's football clubs. Based on data, the chance to score is much bigger when a team plays the ball around and waits for a gap in the defence instead of trying their luck and firing a long shot towards the goal. Yet, every football fan can enjoy a good old rocket that smashes the net. We took a look into the Dutch Eredivisie and TOTO KNVB Beker. Which players should you keep an eye on if you want to enjoy some long shots from outside the box? FACTS took a look at the top three.
Jesper Karlsson - AZ Alkmaar
The Swedish winger is getting more and more important for AZ since some of last season’s key players left. When it comes to scoring goals from outside the box he confirms his role as one of the next leaders of AZ. As a typical inside forward he has now scored four goals from outside the box, the highest number of all Eredivisie players.
Olivier Boscagli - PSV
Even though the Frenchman plays most of his games as a central defender at PSV, he has a fantastic kick. He has scored three goals this season so far, all of them from outside the box. All of them were absolute screamers, especially the freekick against PEC Zwolle last October.
Ramiz Zerrouki - FC Twente
A player who is mentioned a lot last week in several football talk shows. The FC Twente midfielder is gaining a lot of attention because of his long shots lately. Last weekend he scored a technically outstanding goal with the inside foot from outside the penalty area against Go Ahead Eagles. In both competitions, he has scored three goals from outside the box so far. This number could have been four. The Algerian scored a perfect long shot against Sparta, sadly this goal got disallowed because his teammate Limnios was standing offside earlier that attack.
